Joseph and Caroline finished reading A View from Saturday in Moving Beyond the Page (which they thoroughly enjoyed!). The end of the unit project was to plan a tea and invite friends over to enjoy it with them. They had to plan the menu and the activities for the event.
They started out by having the kids pick a funny hat from our vast hat collection to wear. (There were several references to Alice in Wonderland in the novel, so the hat idea came from that).
Another activity they planned that was also directly tied to Alice, was Painting the Roses Red. We got silk flowers from Michael's and we used food coloring diluted with water to paint our roses.
At the very end of the tea (and yet another reference to Alice), we had each kid "fall down the rabbit hole" by following a maze of string (there was one for each kid present....8 tangles of string in the backyard!) At the end of each string there was a surprise for the tea party goer.
We also decided that we would do our tea "backwards" from Alice. We had falling down the rabbit hole last and painting the roses first. ;)
The kids had such a good time with this activity (as they do with ALL party planning activities ;)).
